Creative in the Kitchen

I can't think of a better end to a rough couple of weeks than a batch of The Best Gooey Rolls Ever!

Yes, it's been a little difficult at the crafty corner lately. We began school and the big boy is struggling quite a bit. I am very pleased, however, with the staff and school administration - stepping right in to work with us and create a plan for success. Some adjustments and have been made and I'm not afraid to ask for help from those around me who can, so I think we are on the right track.

And then there is the little boy..... he had his tonsils and adnoids out on Friday. Yuck! I know that he is going to feel so much better once we get through the next couple of days, but it's a little tough now. If you've ever had your baby in surgery, regardless of what type, you know how your heart wrenches. The hardest part was seeing him come out of the anesthesia. We were home after just a few hours post-op; he's been ok in the mornings but the nights are a little rough.

So hubby has been asking, for as long as I can remember, for me to make homemade sticky buns. I've never made them before, so I did a little looking around on the web. I found a great recipe on AllRecipes.com and made a few modifications. Well, I have to say, the end result was fabulous.... better than CinnaBon, better than any rolls I've ever had before.... Yes, that good!

So, while I don't have a card or paper creation to share, I do have a picture of our glorious rolls and the recipe to share. Enjoy!

**Warning** The recipe you are about to read is not for the faint of heart. I'm no Paula Deen, but there is a lot of butter and sugar in these rolls. You may dirty every single pan and bowl in your kitchen and you will need to carve out several hours of your life to prepare these but, believe me, it's worth it!

For Dough:
1 t sugar
1 (¼ ounce) pkg active dry yeast
½ c warm water
½ c milk
¼ c sugar
¼ butter
1 t salt
2 eggs, slightly beaten
4 ½ c all-purpose flour

For Glaze:
¾ c butter
¾ c brown sugar
½ c chopped pecans

For Filling:
¼ c butter, plus 2 T butter
¾ c brown sugar
1 t cinnamon
¾ c chopped pecans

In a small bowl, dissolve 1 t sugar and yeast in the warm water. Let stand for about 10 minutes. In a small saucepan, warm milk until it begins to bubble; remove from heat. Into the milk, mix ¼ c sugar, ¼ c butter and salt; stir until dissolved. Set aside until lukewarm.

In a large bowl (easiest in a KitchenAid stand mixer), combine yeast mixture, milk mixture, eggs and 1 ½ c of the flour; mix well to combine. Add the remaining flour, ½ c at a time, mixing well after each addition. When the dough pulls together, turn out onto a lightly floured board and knead until smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes.

Lightly oil a large bowl; place dough in the bowl and turn to coat with oil. Cover with a damp towel and let rise in a warm place until doubled in volume, about 1 hr. This can also be left to rise overnight.

While the dough is rising, or first thing in the morning, melt ¾ c butter in small saucepan. Add ¾ c brown sugar and whisk until smooth. Pour into greased 9 x 13” pan. Sprinkle pan with ½ c chopped pecans.

In a small bowl, combine ¾ c brown sugar, ¾ c pecans and 1 t cinnamon. Have ¼ c butter softened and ready. Melt remaining 2 T butter in a separate bowl.

Turn dough out onto lightly floured board and roll out to an 18 x 14 rectangle. Spread softened butter on dough, leaving ½ inch border uncovered. Sprinkle brown sugar and pecan mixture evenly over the dough. From the long edge, begin rolling tightly. Slice into 15 even slices. Place slices cut side down in prepared pan. Brush tops of rolls with melted butter. Cover and let rise for 1 hr. Bake at 375 degrees for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown. Let rest for 3 minutes and then turn out onto serving platter. Enjoy!

Flowers for Teacher

I made this fun little bouquet to send in with my oldest on his first day of 1st Grade. These fun flowers are just no.2 pencils topped with die cut blooms and cardstock stickers... fun, huh? I added a pen in for balance and to add a little message. Hope this makes a good first-day impression :)

I've been busy cleaning my craft room... it seems never-ending. It is time, however, to say goodbye to some of my stamp sets. I will be posting a list of retired sets that I'm willing to part with.... as difficult as it is! Look for the list (stamp set and selling price) on Monday, then act quickly to get what you want! Until then, thanks for stopping by and have a great weekend!

Quick and Easy Gift Idea

I really like making simple, quick "gifty" type projects.... These are for a few teachers at the preschool my youngest attends. He will be moving up to the Pre-K class next week - I can't believe it! These are diaper fold pouches filled with Hershey nuggets. The pouch is super easy - no adhesive necessary - and you can find Beate's tutorial over at Splitcoast. I'm still using last year's DSP; I think I'm the only demo who didn't pre-order the Bella paper - what was I thinking ?! Anyway, I just filled a cello bag with nuggest that were wrapped in 1" strips of DSP, tied with pretty ribbon and viola' - Too cute and so simple! Thanks for stopping by.... Enjoy!

A Pirates Party

No crafty post here, but I wanted to share some photos from our celebration of the little guy's 4th birthday. We had a pirate party, complete with pirate ship cake and a treasure hunt. I like to do things myself for the kids' party... this one was a lot of fun. The best part was when we ventured out into the neighborhood to find the hidden pirates treasure. All the guys (Daddy, Papa, Uncle and cousin) were decked out in Pirate garb, complete with bandanas, eyepatches and hoop earrings (hey, I was in charge of the party, so they had no choice!). We followed the treasure map which led us to the play area down the street. The treasure was found.... and as we headed back toward the house, a realtor and her clients stepped out of the house for sale right across from the playground. We were a sight! So either they left and never looked back for fear of the pirates in the neighborhood or they are happy to have found such a fun block to live on! Here are some of my favorite photos from the day.... Enjoy!

Goodbye to the Spring/Summer Collection....

Tomorrow is a BIG day... the first day to place orders from the new, fabulous Fall/Winter catalog. With each new catty, Stampin' Up! continues to amaze me with their incredible art work and cutting edge perspectives on stamps and accessories. I can't wait to get my first order placed, and even more so for Mr. Brown to bring me the SU! box. Even though the ordering period has ended for the Spring/Summer catalog, I waited until today to say so long to my old friend. Yes, she's well worn in and has been slightly abused, but always in a loving way. She has inspired me and cost me lots of money (not too much, honey!). We've had a good run, but I'm all about out with the old, in with the new (thankfully hubby doesn't feel that way.... we'll soon be celebrating our 9th anniversary!). So now, it's goodbye..... it was Groovy Guava; I'll always be Wild about Wasabi; I won't cry a River Rock nor sing Blue Bayou; I'll simply admire the Soft Sky and have Pure memories of Pomegranate! (A little corny, I know, but I'm a sap - what can I say?)

I did take some time this afternoon to work on a little card to send in to the 1st grade teacher on the first day of school. I think she'll like using the paperclips.... she can even use them as bookmarks. I had some lighting issues when I took the photo, so the apples look neon, but they are just watercolored with Real Red... they look good in real life. Thanks for stopping by.... Enjoy!
Supplies used:
ABC Images, "for you" from Boatloads of Love
Long notes (Wild Wasabi), Eastcoast Prep DSP, Real Red, Whisper White and Kraft CS
3/4", 1" and 1 1/4" circle, Designer Label and Round tab punch
Double-stitched ribbon (Wild Wasabi)
Scallop Edge punch
Watercolor paper

Keeping is Simple

I haven't played along with Kristina's Color Challenge in a while, so I thought I'd give it a shot this week.
I thought the combo would be tough, so I kept it real simple and clean.... I used the new set "Flight of the Butterfly" and kept the colors minimal. The only real detail on the card somes from the paper piercing tool and the detail in the butterfly. I was inspired to create movement with by butterfly by Alex... (Thanks, Alex!) A simple card with an inspiring message.... Enjoy!

Inspiration

Good Evening and thanks for stopping by my blog. I tell you, I am on fire since coming home from convention. I have been spending lots of time in my stamp room and time with a notebook trying to get all the fantastic tips and ideas out of my head and onto paper. It feels good to be fired up for paper crafting and sharing what I love with others. One person who has a great deal to do with the inspiration I am feeling is Kimberly Van Diepen. She earned the honor of being named the #7 SU! demo of the year.... Wow! She did this despite having moved several times in the last few years, having to rebuild her business each time. I enjoyed being there to celebrate her accomplishments and to get some great words of advice from her. She is a straight-shooter and tells it like it is, yet she is so genuine and has a real passion for what she does. I think she really represents what Stampin' Up is all about. So, thank you Kimberly!

I created this card to send her way and I thought I'd share with all of you as well. This card uses one of the new sets, "Inspired by Nature." I love the silhouette collection that SU! offers us.... gorgeous images to work with. I paired the image up with the Stampin' Up! Statement of the Heart stamp... a perfect match for this card. I kept the image soft by using a great resist technique - stamp your image on glossy cardstock in Versamark, then brayer over it with the ink of your choice. In this case, I used Always Artichoke. The classic ink slightly resists the Versamark ink, leaving a very soft, subtle image. I stamped the Statement of the Heart in Craft White. Enjoy!

Tart and Tangy Photo Holder

I was able to pry my own hands from the new Stampin' Up! Idea Book and Catalog long enough to do a little creating this afternoon..... I have to say that the Fall/Winter 08 catty is my favorite ever (I know, I know.... I say that each catalog, but really, it's the best ever this time!) There are so many new sets, design series paper, accessories and ideas - I find something new each time I make my way through it. One set that made it's way into the catalog is "Tart and Tangy"; it's from the Spring mini catalog and I am glad it's available for any of you that may have missed the first chance to get your hands on it. It is soooo cute and the matching paper is wonderful. I used it today to create this picture holder; a perfect way to display a favorite photo on a desk. In this case, this is one of my favorite pictures.... look close and you'll see my little goof-ball seems to be doing an impression of Peter Brady in the "Pork Chops and Applesauce" episode!

I covered a cardboard coaster with the coordinating paper, added a little ribbon and created a fun embellishment using a couple circle punches and the scallop circle punch. By using glassy glaze over the strawberry, I added a thick shine to make it really "pop!"

If you'd like to find out more details about this project or how to purchase the supplies needed to make your own, give me a shout!
Check back soon to find more creations and inspirations.....

Convention Excitement!

I just got back from the 20 Year Celebration Stampin' Up! Convention in Salt Lake. This was my first convention and all I can say is "WHOA!" I had such a blast..... It was everything I had hoped for and much more. Can you imagine being in a place with more than 6,000 crazy stampin' ladies? I'm telling you, the energy and excitement in the air was thick and it only got better with lots of new stamps.

We all enjoyed getting some new stamps, seeing the Fall/Winter 2008 catalog and hearing some of the fabulous things that SU! has in store for us. It's a great time to be a part of SU!
Along with swapping, stamping, dancing and screaming, I was able to make some awesome new friends and see some old friends too. I even got to see one of my favorite bloggers, KWerner!

I will be stampin' my fingers to the bone beginning tomorrow, so check back for some great sneak peaks from the upcoming catty available August 11th.... you're not going to want to miss out. In the meantime, I'll leave you with a couple photos from convention.....
